There’s nothing quite like a steaming hot pizza with loads of melted mozzarella cheese, topped with pepperoni or sliced meatballs, bacon or sausage. Unfortunately when you eat Kosher pizza, you can’t have any of the aforementioned delicacies on top of cheese.
In order to eat Kosher, milk products and meat products may not be consumed together. In fact, there are separate dishes and pots and pans with which to cook both meat and dairy in a Kosher kitchen. This eliminates the kind of pizza most people are accustomed to, but it doesn’t mean a Kosher pizza can’t be enjoyed anyway.
So what kind of toppings can sit atop a Kosher pizza? The first one that comes to mind is a simple cheese pizza. Top on some added cheese and you’ve got a delicious pie in itself. But for those who really crave a little something extra on top of their mozzarella, there are a few options.
Parve bacon bits are actually quite delicious when served on a Kosher pizza. Because they aren’t made of bacon—or any other kind of meat product—it’s perfectly acceptable to eat them. McCormick (the company famous for all their spices) makes a vegan product called Bac’n Pieces. They are bacon bits with no meat or milk products in them. Those who’ve tried them say they really do taste like bacon. When they’re combined with the hot melted cheese, it’s likely hard to tell they’re not the real thing.
Other items that might top a Kosher pizza include imitation crab meat and vegetables like onions, peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms. These all sound rather tasty, too.
